Further Mathematics AS & A Level at The Camden School for Girls
A Level Further Mathematics involves further and deeper study of Mathematics and its applications and is taken in addition to Mathematics A level. It provides a thorough preparation for further Mathematical study. Students should be confident in experimenting with and applying their mathematical knowledge. Students are prepared for an A2 in Mathematics in Year 12 and then for A2 Further Mathematics in Year 13.
The syllabus is presented in six modules:
Further Pure 1, 2 and 3 and three from a range of Mechanics and Statistics modules. The Pure modules introduce and develop a wide range of key techniques including advanced calculus, series, trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, complex numbers, matrices, vectors and numerical methods.
In the Mechanics modules students apply these techniques to modelling and analysing a wide range of physical situations including rigid body dynamics, circular motion and collisions. In the Statistics modules, students broaden their base of data analysis techniques.
All applicants must have an academic reference from their current school stating their predicted grades. These must in all cases include GCSEs at level 6 or above in English language and maths, and 3 other GCSEs at or above grade B.
'A' grade or above at GCSE Maths
The course is assessed entirely by examinations on each of the modules in June. Each examination is 1.5 hours long. Students “cash in” their modules for either an AS level (3 modules) or an A level (6 modules).
Those who qualify in Further Mathematics are in the fortunate position of having a wide range of career and degree choices. In the past, students who have taken Further Mathematics A level have, as a consequence, achieved good grades in A level Mathematics and secured places at first rate Universities to study Mathematics, Medicine, Economics, Engineering and the Sciences.
