Media Studies A-Level at Diss High School
A-Level Media focuses on the way in which technological texts communicate with their audiences in the changing contemporary media landscape. These texts include the press, forms of advertising, television, radio, film and the Internet. Students will learn about key concepts in the media, such as representation, ideology and genre, as well as studying media theories, debates and social contexts. Students will apply both practical and theoretical knowledge to a wide range of texts. They will have the opportunity to produce their own media texts.
WJEC Media (AS):
MS1 Students will explore media representations and audience/user responses through the study of the genre, narrative and representation. Assessment of this module is a 2 ½ hour external exam based on unseen media texts.
MS2 Students will create their own media texts. They will work on various research and pre-production tasks, create a production (e.g. music video, television drama sequence, magazine spread) and write a 1600 word report/evaluation of the production process.
WJEX Media (A2):
MS3 Students will undertake a 2000 word textual investigation into a specific area of the media. They will then create either an audio-visual, digital, or print-based production informed by their investigation. Finally, they will compose a 750 word evaluation of the project.
MS4 Students study three different media industries in this synoptic unit (for example, music, advertising and computer games). Candidates will study elements such as industry marketing and promotion, regulation and distribution. Assessment of this module is a 2 ½ hour external exam based on the media industry and audience response theory.
