Vehicle Technology IMI Diploma Level 2 at Croydon College

Course description

This course is designed for those who have a passion for cars as well as an interest in the maintenance of vehicles. This programme will develop the skills that you will have learnt on a Level 1 course and it will provide you with the practical experience and the technical knowledge needed to work in the automotive industry. You will learn how to carry out maintenance and repairs on cars, vans, and other light vehicles in our modern, fully equipped workshops. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Throughout the course you will study a range of subjects, including the engine (including petrol and diesel engines), engines and transmissions, ignition and electrical systems, chassis and frames, and health and safety practices. 

Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.

Course content

Specialist Facilities:

This programme is delivered by our fully qualified and professional staff. You will gain experience in exactly what it would be like to work as a technician in a modern workshop. You will develop your understanding of vehicle maintenance, in both the classroom and the workshop, while working towards completing a portfolio.

You will benefit from working in a modern, fully equipped vehicle workshop with an extensive range of industry standard Snap-on and Bosch diagnostic equipment. You will be working on a fleet of modern vehicles you will and diagnose faults on bespoke engine running rigs.

You will also gain the confidence to conduct a mock MOT inspection as well as carry out lubrication and full servicing with diagnostic fault finding techniques.

Trips and Activities:

You will have the opportunity to participate in trips and visits to Brands Hatch, BMW training at Reading, and the Mini production line based at Oxford.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D-G, one being English or maths, or a Level 1 related qualification.

English and maths assessed at Entry Level 3 or above.

Future opportunities

Completion of this course can lead to progression to our Level 3 vehicle technology programme. Alternatively, you could enter employment within the motor industry as an apprentice.

Now is a great time to be working in the motor vehicle industry as the sector is predicted to grow in the coming years. It is estimated that 100,000 new automotive jobs will be created by 2020 and this industry generates £59 billion each year.

Future careers can include vehicle maintenance and repair, body building, roadside assistance and recovery, vehicle sales, and motorsport maintenance and repair.
