AS Level Science in Society at William Farr CofE Comprehensive School

Course description

Science in Society is an interesting and topical GCE advanced level course. It aims to develop the knowledge and skills that are needed for students to understand how science works, analyse contemporary issues involving science and technology and communicate their scientific appreciation and understanding to others.

At William Farr, we offer Science in Society up to AS level, as an extracurricular subject to be completed throughout years 10 and 11.

Year 10

In year 10 two groups run in parallel. Each group will be taught by two teachers over the year, covering the biological sciences and the physical sciences. The coursework element is also covered in year 10.

Topics covered

Germ Theory
Infectious Diseases Now
Transport Issues
Radiation: Risks and Uses
Theory of Evolution

Year 11

As it is totally voluntary, we do appreciate that students may decide that Science in Society is not for them, so in year 11, the two groups merge into one. The written exam is taken at the end of year 11.
