Business Level 3 Extemded Diploma at East Surrey College

Course description

This is a practical, work related course, which develops the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to provide a sound, basic business education. You will be required to use real businesses for your coursework. A number of trips are organised during the year to relate your learning to the world outside of College. In past years these have included Thorpe Park, West London South Employment Tribunal, Cadbury World and Butlins. You will often work in small groups and you may well be required to present your findings to the rest of the group. Attendance of at least 90% is necessary in order to complete the course.

Course content

The course comprises 18 units (9 Units in year 1 and 9 units in year 2) and the range is very wide, including both Core Units and those designed to facilitate more specialist study.

• Starting a New Business
• Business Accounting

• Effective People, Communication and Information
• Contract Law for a Business
• Civil Liability for a Business

• Planning a Career in Business
• Website Design Strategy
 Marketing Research

Entry requirements

  •  Five GCSEs grade A*-C including English and Maths / a BTEC First Diploma, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification, at Merit or Distinction level and GCSE English & Maths A*-C
  •  Students over 19 without these qualifications, but with relevant work experience, will be considered for the course
  •  All applicants will have an interview and applicants may also be required to take a literacy and numeracy assessment. You must also be very interested in current affairs and the business world.

Assessment

The course is continuously assessed through assignments, practical project tasks and case studies. In some subjects there will also be written and/or verbal tests. You will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on your own and in groups. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local business wherever possible.

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
 
Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.
 

Future opportunities

It is a well-regarded qualification for entry to Higher Education and advanced professional studies. Employment opportunities range from careers in sales and finance to human resources and marketing.
