Further Mathematics Edexcel A Level at Lea Valley High School

Course description

Further Maths at A Level will put you in an excellent position to study Maths or a subject with a high maths content at university. The course goes into depth over a wide range of advanced maths topics and gives students a solid understanding that will help them in any higher level course requiring maths.

Course content

In Year 1, you will study Further Pure Maths (FP1) and Statistics (S2) which build on work from the Maths A Level course and also introduces a number of new topics. You will also study Decision Maths (D1).


In Year 2, you will continue to develop your skills in Pure Maths (FP2) and Decision Maths (D2). You will also study more Mechanics (M2) which will be introduced in the normal A Level Maths course.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSE A* ‐ C including English Language at grade C or better
  • GCSE Mathematics at grade A or better


The course is entirely exam based with three modules at the end of each year.

Future opportunities

A Level Further Maths and A Level Maths would be very useful to anyone wanting to do a Maths degree but would also be particularly useful for any course which involves Maths such as Physics, Engineering, Computing, Economics and Business.


Further Maths students can go into a wide range of jobs, including finance, engineering and teaching. The numeracy, literacy, problem solving and research skills that are developed during the course make it possible for students to branch into any other field of study or work.
