Applied Science Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Mid Cheshire College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science consists of 18 different units to study, delivered largely through practical work, investigations, visits and trips; six core units and 12 specialist units. In the first year, you will study the core units, plus Mathematics and Statistics. A similar pattern of three core units and six specialist units is followed in the second year. If you are successful you will have gained a Level 3 qualification that is equivalent to three different A-Level science subjects.

Each unit is assessed through various types coursework. Two of the units are externally assessed by the exam board.

• Fundamentals of Science;
• Working in the Science Industry;
• Scientific Investigation;
• Scientific Practical Techniques;
• Perceptions of Science;
• Chemical Laboratory Techniques;
• Physiology of Human Body Systems;
• Electric circuits and their Application
• Microbiological Techniques;
• Genetics and Genetic Engineering;
• Practical Chemical Analysis;
• Organic Chemistry

Course content

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment.

The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study.

The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment.

As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification.

Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which may include work experience and projects.

Entry requirements

For the Extended Diploma (2 years) you will need a minimum of:

i) 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C
ii) or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science (Merit),
iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (Merit),

To help your employability skills, the college structures the timetable to allow students who have not achieved grade C in Maths or English GCSE to study it alongside the BTEC L3. We can discuss what suits your needs at your interview.


19 units, assessed by a large number of assignments continually across the 2 years.

Future opportunities

Higher Education, Training or Employment. Successful completion of the course will show that you have developed a range of skills, knowledge and understanding in Science, as well as the transferable skills of communication, IT, self motivation and team work, which are so important to employers.
