Mathematics at Plume College

Course description

At AS Level you will study three modules:Core 1 and 2 together with Statistics 1. Each of the modules is assessed by a written paper of one hour and thirty minutes duration. There is no coursework component at AS level. The Core papers provide continuity and progression from Key Stage 4. The skills and concepts already encountered in algebra, co-ordinate geometry and trigonometry will be extended and new topics (including series, numerical methods and calculus) will be introduced. There is an emphasis on the understanding of functions and their graphs and hence a growing importance in the use of graphical calculators. Statistics extends the study of probability and data analysis and introduces hypothesis testing.

Each module is subdivided into units of work and these units of work are grouped together for assessment purposes. Homework is set regularly centred on the unit currently being studied. The school is a member of the Further Maths Network and students have access to on-line support, interactive programmes and model answer solutions.

At A2 Level a further three modules are studied:Core 3 and 4 together with Decision 1. Again, each of the modules is assessed by a written paper of one hour and thirty minutes duration. There is however a coursework component to Core 3 which comprises 20% of the assessment for this module and is undertaken at the end of Year 12.
