Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) Level 3 Diploma at Somerset College
This is a great course for those students who wish to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for a successful career in the sports and leisure industry.
In the first year you will complete a 90 credit Diploma in Sport, if you are successful you will then proceed to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. This provides the ideal stepping stone onto a Higher Education degree course as it is equivalent to three A levels.
Individuals and groups participating in sport have a positive impact on our communities and society as a whole. There are many exciting opportunities in sport which in addition to specific sport related skills, require skills such as self-management, team working, business and customer awareness, problem solving, literacy, numeracy and communication.
Throughout the course and in partnership with our local employers you will coach numerous schools, clubs and events, this over time will build your confidence, organisation skills, improve qualities and open up employment opportunities.
During your study of the Level 3 Diploma in Sport, you will select the appropriate pathway modules applicable to you. These may include:
- Fitness, training and programming
- Sports coaching
- Land and water-based outdoor & adventurous activities
- Fitness testing for sport and exercise
- Practical sport
- Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
- The physiology of fitness
- Assessing risk in sport
- Leadership in sport
- Work experience in sport
- Outdoor and adventurous activities
- Practical football
- Assessing the risk in football
- Sports injuries
One of the main purposes of the qualification is to help learners to progress ultimately into employment. The vast majority of employers require learners to have certain technical skills, knowledge and understanding to work in a particular sector, but they are also looking for employability skills to ensure that employees are effective in the workplace. Therefore work experience will be an important part of your learning experience.

Learners must have a keen interest in health, fitness and coaching. They need to be committed to volunteering and leading, as well as being a positive role model to others. They must have the desire and positive attitude to work towards the key qualities of an employee within this competitive industry.
Five GCSEs grade A* to C, including Maths and English. We will also accept a related Diploma at Merit/Distinction profile.
You will be taught through a mixture of practical lessons with external visits, guest speakers and classroom lectures. You will be assessed by practical and written assignments, external examination, continuous assessment and presentations.
Our experienced, qualified staff will support you throughout the year to ensure that targets and deadlines are met in order for you to achieve. You will have a personal tutor who will support and guide you on a weekly basis regarding the course and your career aspirations.
You could seek employment in sports centres, fitness studios, leisure centres, health promotion. Community work, holiday centres, residential centre, cruise ships, youth work or apply to the Uniformed Public Services.
