Painting & Decorating City and Guilds Diploma Level 1 at PETROC

Course description

If you like practical work and have an artistic flair, this could be the career for you. Painting and decorating is a skilled trade, in demand both by the construction industry and by home-owners. This course is designed for those interested in gaining employment in the painting and decorating industry or wishing to gain knowledge and practical skills for personal projects.

The painting and decorating workshop is fully equipped to support the curriculum and a wide range of practical activities. All trainers and assessors are experienced in there trade and approved by the awarding body City and Guilds.

Course content

You'll study a whole range of modules including: health, safety and welfare; knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication; knowledge of construction technology; erection and dismantling of access equipment; preparation of common surface types for decoration; how to apply basic paint systems by brush and roller; application of foundation and plain papers; and how to produce standard decorative finishes. All aspects of the course will be studied through both classroom based theory sessions and practical based workshop sessions. 

As part of this study programme you will undertake maths & English (if you have not achieved a Grade C GCSE in these subjects), work experience, enrichment and tutorial.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE's at D or above, including English & Maths 

Good, positive school record including personal statements from your teachers and yourself.


City and Guilds 6707-13 level1 has 8 unit end test for the knowledge (2 units must be carried out on-line) Students will complete and be assessed on 24 practical tasks with in the 8 units which can be graded from pass to Distinction.

Financial information

Q. Do I need any equipment?
A. Students are required to purchase their own safety boots, access to workshops is not permitted without them. Students are also required to provide their own stationery and textbooks. Equipment can be discussed fully at interview and a kit list will be sent out prior to the start of the course.

Q. Are there any costs for this course?
A. Students are asked to pay a contribution towards educational visits. 

Future opportunities

You will be able to use this qualification to help you gain employment or an Apprenticeship and NVQ2 within the industry or you can continue to study on the Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.
