Why should you consider taking this course?
Textiles will give you the opportunity to learn new and exciting skills, which you will apply in the creative development of your own ideas. These ideas will lead to a range of varied and challenging textile outcomes. You will enjoy this course if you are a creative, logical, independent thinker who is not afraid of hard work.
Textile Design allows each student to further explore their creative and technical skills and develop ideas through sketches, samples, exploratory work and independent study. A designated sixth form area allows pupils the space to explore and develop their portfolio’s using the extensive range of materials, tools and equipment.
Textile Design would suit an array of learning styles such as visual, kinaesthetic, and creative approaches, whilst the small amount of written work would demand good literacy skills.
What is covered at AS?
A portfolio of work exploring surface pattern decoration – fabric printing, mono printing, applique, collage, felting, texturing and constructed textiles using topics or themes as a starting point.
Controlled Assignment – 10 hour practical exam – the research and development of a theme issued by the exam board. Past themes have included ‘Insects’, ‘Chromatic’, ‘Cityscape’.
What is covered at A2?
Personal Investigation – a major project that has a personal significance, exploring the work of a designer or artist through textile samples and analytical writing eventually leading to a practical outcome based on your findings.
Controlled Assignment – 15 hour practical exam – research and development of a theme issued by the exam board.
What qualifications will you need to start this course?
Suitable for all pathways provided there is GCSE grade C+ one from a design subject or evidence of design ability from elsewhere e.g. personal interest. Positive attitude and enthusiasm to learn.
What careers could this course help prepare you for?
