Sociology A-Level at George Salter Academy

Course description

The course focuses on contemporary society. It is designed to foster the development of critical and reflective thinking about the social world in which we live . It will encourage an awareness of social structure and social action in explaining social issues that impact on our society. Many of the topics covered focus on social institutions and how these institutions have changed over time . Students are encouraged to be independent learners and to develop their own sociological awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world .

The course is designed to provide students with an introduction to Sociology that emphasises contemporary social processes and social changes .

The course involves visits to external agencies during both years of study.

Sociology is seen as desirable for a number of careers including; medicine, Law, education, social work, media, policing, criminal justice, counselling and child care.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs (or equivalents) Grade A*– C including English.
