Women's Hairdressing (QCF): Level 2 Diploma at College of North West London (FE)

Course description

High levels of knowledge, technical ability and creativity are needed in order to successfully pursue a career in this industry. The profession offers qualified hairdressers the flexibility to be be self-employed and run their own businesses. Our students are national and regional award winners, testimony to the quality of teaching and training facilities we provide. This is an Apprenticeship route. You will attend college one day a week and you will be assessed in the work place. Functional Skills and employment rights and responsibilities are an integral part of the apprenticeship framework.

Course content

You will study the following units (each unit has a credit value of between 2 and 10 credits and this course is equal to 53 credits): • Shampoo and condition hair and scalp (3 credits) • Client consultation for hair services (3 credits) • Working in the hair industry (4 credits) • The art of dressing hair (5 credits) • Cut women’s hair (8 credits) • Colour and lighten hair (10 credits) • Follow health and safety practice (3 credits) • Create an image based on a theme (7 credits) • Salon reception duties (3 credits) • Promote products and services to clients (3 credits)

Entry requirements

You will need English and Maths skills at Level 1. If you do not have evidence of your English and Maths levels you will be given an online English and Maths assessment after you submit your application. You may also be asked to complete a piece of free writing or a vocational assessment. If you meet the entry requirements you will then be offered an interview with a tutor to discuss the course.


You will be assessed by your tutor through a portfolio of evidence based on the practical work you have produced. Other methods of assessment include written examinations and assignments.
