Science (Applied) A level at Hartismere School

Course description

This course provides candidates with the opportunity to develop appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas and practices used by organisations, businesses and industry. It is set in a vocational context by using research, planning, analysis and site visits.

 

Course content

AS One Year Course
Unit 1: Science At Work
Unit 2: Analysis At Work
Unit 3: Health & Fitness

A2 Two Year Course
Unit 8: Investigating The Scientists Work
Unit 16: Working Wave
Unit 15: Applications Of Biotechnology

What can you expect? 
The course is designed to incorporate scientific industrial processes and for the student to be aware of the scientific vocations available to them. There will be industry visits and a possibility of a work experience placement, as well as the usual lesson based time within school. This course is perfect for a pupil who excels at coursework and loves to see practical investigations working in real situations. It also gives scientific ideas to those wishing to gain a work placement at the end of the course, or for those wishing to pursue a higher education experience at University.

Entry requirements

Candidates should have studied Science at GCSE level and achieved at least C grades.  

Assessment

Assessment is mainly through coursework with one examined unit in each year. 

Future opportunities

This course is designed to give a broad introduction to employment within the scientific sector and further training. Candidates who achieve these qualifications will also be suitably prepared to enter a variety of HND or Degree Level Courses in science-related subjects.
