A Level Applied Science at The King's Academy

Course description

Applied Science is a course for student who are interested in science or in pursuing a science-related career. It allows the use and development of practical skills but also focuses on science content which is relevant to all areas of life and work. If you study this course you will become more familiar with the importance of science in everyday life such as medicine, sport and laboratory research.

Applied Science focuses on how science is used in the workplace. the A Level programme which allows you to study all three Science disciplines in one course and is equally weighted in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Applied Science has a great emphasis on portfolio work rather than examinations and therefore increases the use of ICT skills used to present and research your work.

The course consists of four portfolio units and two examined units; the first three are studied in Lowers Sixth (AS) year and are compulsory units

AS Level

  • Investigating Science at Work
  • Energy Transfer Systems
  • Finding out about Substances


    The Upper Sixth (A2) year is comprised of a further three units. One is a compulsory module and the other modules will be decided depending upon the interests and aspirations of the current intake.

    A2 Applied Science

  • Planning and carrying out a Scientific Investigation
  • Portfolio to be decided
  • Examined module to be decided.

  • Entry requirements

    At least two C grades in GCSE Science courses or a Distinction at BTEC Applied Science.
