Course description

Physics is the discipline of science that deals with the everyday working of things around us. It will open your eyes to a level of complex simplicity as to how the universe is and how everything around us works.

Studying Physics will enhance your ability to understand how to solve problems and engineer solutions to fix them, or create something completely new! With this firm knowledge of the working world and inherent problem-solving skills, Physics leads to great possibilities within all types of software, mechanical and electronic engineering.

It is a highly regarded subject choice for employers who require candidates with good mathematical and problem-solving skills. It serves as an excellent starting point for a wide range of careers or professions linked to Engineering and Aviation

4. Mechanics and materials

5. Electricity

6. Further mechanics and thermal Physics (A’ Level only)

7. Fields and their consequences (A’ Level only)

8. Nuclear physics (A’ Level only)


9. Astrophysics (A’ Level only)

10. Medical physics (A’ Level only)

11. Engineering physics (A’ Level only)

12. Turning points in physics (A’ Level only)

13. Electronics (A’ Level only)

There will be 2 written papers at AS on sections 1 to 5 and 3 papers at A Level on sections 1 to 8.

Students will enter for one of the optional sections

(9-13) in paper 3 at A Level. There will be no coursework or controlled assessment. Students

will do at least 12 practicals during their A Level course. An endorsement of practical work will be assessed by teachers. Practical skills and data analysis will be assessed in paper 3 at A Level.

Entry requirements

Science or Physics GCSE grade 6 plus Mathematics English Language GCSE grade 6.

Financial information

£30.00 deposit to cover all text books to be paid on enrolment day. This will be refunded at the end of your course once your books have been returned to the subject teacher.

£5.00 non refundable payment for a Key Fob to access the building at Gable Hall School and St Clere's School.
