A Level Applied Science at The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls

Course description

Applied Science shows you how Science is important to the world around you. It shows you that scientist’s do not just sit around in lab coats looking through microscopes and it develops scientific inquiry skills that are used in industry and prepares you for the many challenges that are faced by scientists and people who use science in their everyday lives. 

Course content

AS Applied Science

AS Level Applied Science is studied in the Lower Sixth Year, it consists of one examined unit and two coursework units.

AS Unit 1 Consists of a detailed report of the types of businesses that use science.  Describing the type of science jobs involved, the qualifications, skills and personality traits that you need for the job.  For many pupils this helps them to think about their careers in a scientific field

AS Unit 2 consists of a written exam and involves the study of the biological energy systems in the body. The second part of the unit is all about physics and you learn about how energy is changed and transferred.

AS Unit 3 is a practical coursework unit.  It deals with Chemistry practical’s that are used daily in labs across the planet, from Medical to Forensic labs.  This includes burning things, separating dyes, using university analysis machines, carrying out titrations and flame tests

A2 Applied Science

This course is taken in the upper sixth year. A2 level is the same structure as AS with 1 examined unit and 2 coursework units.

A2 Unit 7 -  Requires students to plan and carry out a scientific investigation that is linked to industry. This can be any investigation and in previous years has looked at biodiesel and the use of enzymes in industry.

A2 Unit 14—Is all about a Healthy Body, taking measurements and medical applications.

A2 Unit 16—Is an ecological study on human impact on the environment. Students are required to compare 2 different environments through field work and analysis of data.  This is presented in a report alongside researched information on recycling and conservation.

Entry requirements

Students are required to have an average of a C grade in Core and Additional Science

or

C grade in Additional Applied Science.

Future opportunities

AS/A level Applied Science gives you skills that can be transferred to a wide range of University courses and career paths. Examples include a variety of foundation courses (optometry, pharmacology etc), nursing, midwifery and physiotherapy.
