French AS & A Level at Ashlyns School

Course description

This course is suitable for students who have a real passion and aptitude for languages and who are proactively searching opportunities to develop their knowledge of French. The course provides opportunities to enjoy studying authentic written and multimedia materials, developing further the four skills acquired at GCSE: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will explore a range of topics with the emphasis very much on the culture of French-speaking countries, including units on Media, Popular Culture, the Environment, Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues.

We encourage students to immerse themselves in the language and culture of the country/countries where the language is spoken. Outside the classroom, students are encouraged to read widely in the target language, to listen to radio broadcasts of foreign language stations and to watch TV programmes and films in French. Each student will spend a minimum of thirty minutes per week with a French assistant to develop his/her listening and speaking skills.
