English Literature A level at Upton Hall F C J

Course description

Students of English Literature at A Level will explore the relationships between texts and the contexts within which they are written and understood. This specification privileges the power of the reader to make meaning, encouraging students to challenge the interpretations of other readers.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a grade B at GCSE for English and English Literature is required for A Level English Literature.



This subject is not available as an AS Level.


‘Love through the Ages’ – Students will explore the theme of love as seen over time by reading four set texts, including one Shakespeare play, an anthology of love poetry and one prose text. ‘Texts in Shared Contexts’ – Students will explore three set texts from a specific period of time, including one prose, one poetry and one drama text.

Future opportunities

Students of AS and A Level English Literature have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities, such as debating and writing competitions and primary school liaison projects. Trips to the theatre are offered, to venues such as ‘The Lowry’, ‘Picturehouse at Fact’ and ‘The Everyman’. Trips to explore an author’s biographical background in their hometown may also be on offer. An English Literature A-Level can lead to a career in many professions, including Teaching, the Performing Arts, Law, Social Work, Human Resources.

      Directions To get to Upton Hall School:

      From the M53 Northbound: Leave M53 at Junction 2. Continue straight on at the roundabout onto the Upton by-pass (A5027). At the next roundabout turn left onto Old Greasby Road. Take the second turning on the left into Saughall Massie Lane.

      From West Kirby: Head towards Black Horse Hill. Follow Black Horse Hill down and bear left onto Saughall Massie Road. Follow signs up to Upton Village. From Old Greasby Road take the second turning on the left into Saughall Massie Lane.

      From Birkenhead: Head towards Upton Village. The school is located just beyond the traffic lights in the middle of Upton Village. Take Old Greasby Road and then first right into Saughall Massie Lane.

      From Heswall:  Head towards Arrowe Park Hospital. Continue pas the Hospital along Arrowe Park Road (A551) towards Upton Village. Continue up the hill into Upton and at the traffic lights turn left into Old Greasby Road and then first right into Saughall Massie Lane.
