English Language & Literature AS/A2 Level at Chichester High School for Girls

Course description

This course integrates literary and non-literary texts.

Students will engage with a wide range of texts and use literary and linguistic analysis to gain insight into the nature of different texts. Students will develop skills as producers and interpreters of language by creating texts themselves and reflecting on their own methods of production.

Course content

Unit 1:

Telling Stories

Students will explore the representation of place, point of view in narrative and the creation of poetic voice.

Unit 2:

Exploring Conflict:

Students will explore writing about society, the role of the individual in society and re-creative writing based on set texts. Students will use critical commentary to evaluate their own writing. Language analysis methods are integrated into the activities.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above with a grade B in English Language and Literature


You will have 3 assessments, 2 written exam papers and one non-exam assessment.

Paper 1: Closed book exam. 3 hours, 40% total marks.

Paper 2: Open book exam. 2 hours 30 minutes, 40% total marks.

Non-exam assessment: A personal investigation that explores a specific technique or theme in both literary and non-literary discourse (2,500-3,000 words),20% of total marks.
