Childhood Studies Level 2 First Certificate at Warwickshire College Group

Course description

If you are planning to work with children in a variety of different early years sectors, for example day care, nursery,out of school care and schools this is the course for you. This qualification will enable you to work, supervised, with children aged 0-8 years and their families in a variety of settings. This Level 2 qualification provides you with assistant practitioner status' once a pass grade has been achieved. It will give you the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare you for employment. 

You will study all aspects of work with  children and reflect on your personal development. You will be given the opportunity to work with children in a range of placements which may include day nurseries, children's centres,  primary schools , special school and child-minders. You will continue to improve your English and/or maths skills in structured lessons alongside your course, and if you plan to progress to a Level 3 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in English and/or maths by the end of the year.

Course content

You will study 7 units including:

  • Patterns of Child Development 
  • Promoting Children’s Development Through Play 
  • The Principles of Early Years Practice 
  • Promoting Children’s Positive Behaviour 

Students who do not yet have a GCSE grade C in both English and Maths will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and/or Maths as well as Employability and Work Skills.

Entry requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English (or FS L2) or a Level 1 Foundation Diploma. Alternative relevant qualifications will also be considered.

You will have a positive school or college reference with good levels of attendance and punctuality.

Assessment

A variety of methods are used to assess your progress.  These include external examination, observations of your practical work ,individual and group presentations, case studies, assignments, projects, work based assignments, developing learning resources, and display work. The awarding body, will award you a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade for each module according to how well you cover the learning outcomes specified. You are required to successfully complete your work placement experience.

Future opportunities

Employment: This Level 2 qualification provides you with assistant practitioner status' once a pass grade has been achieved. This allows you to undertake supervised work within an early year's environment (0-8 years). . It will give you the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare you for employment.
