Course description

The UAL Awarding Body Level 2 Award in Art & Design is designed to provide an opportunity for those who may have an interest in art and design, to explore some of the materials, methods and processes that support many art and design activities, and to begin to develop some related technical skills. The qualification structure provides a linked introduction to the broad context within which art and design activity is located.

The Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design is designed to build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired through the Award and to provide an opportunity to explore, develop and test creativity. The qualification structure will provide a sound base of skills and knowledge, will enhance self confidence, and impart an understanding of the career demands and opportunities within art and design. The structure of the Diploma, with units linked to provide coherence, will allow learners to develop practical skills and theoretical understanding through a process of reiteration and reinforcement and to develop an effective working practice that will provide support for creativity across a range of stimulating and demanding art and design activities

Course content

By producing art and design work, with a wide variety of techniques you will develop the ability to learn by discovery and creative problem solving. You will assess your own work in partnership with specialist practical tutors.  In addition you will be given the opportunity to investigate experimental approaches to your work, combining traditional and digital methods. You will develop research skills  to inform everything you do, you will learn time management skills that are essential for realising you own ambitions at higher levels of study.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs  at grade D including English Language OR relevant Foundation (Level 1) qualification. 

Assessment

Assessment is based purely on coursework, there are 3 parts to the course which demonstrate the sequence of learning 1. Exploring the tools and language and research skills to inform yourself.2, the apllication of the tools and methods to solve a 2D, a 3D and a Time based problem in Art and D esign 3, is a the challenge of using the tools and problem solving skills to Develop a personal Project at Level 2 or possibly Level 3. Parts 1 & 2 are pass and refer only and encourage a student to be creative and discover the what sets ceativity apart as a set of skills to aquire for life. The final project is detaermines the qualification acheived and is externally assessed again purely on coursework as Pass, Merit, Distinction,  hold the same value as 4 GCSEs and provides a platform to apply for the next level of study

The qualification structure will provide a sound base of skills and knowledge, will enhance self confidence, and impart an understanding of the career demands and opportunities within art and design.The qualification will provide learners with:

  • an introductory experience to some of the materials, methods, processes and technical skills that support art and design activity
  • an introductory understanding of the context in which art and design activity is located
  • an opportunity to test their interest in art and design activity
  • development of an awareness of the value of research to support art and design activity
  • an introduction to drawing skills necessary to support creative activity in art and design
  • development of an understanding of the role of communication skills in the development of ideas
  • an opportunity to to use the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in previous units to identify, research and produce a personal art and design project.
