Design & Technology AS & A Level at Hornsea School and Language College

Course description

A-level design & technology equips you with design skills for the future; you will be able to recognise design needs and develop an understanding of how current global issues, including integrating technology, impacts on today’s world. It also encourages creativity and innovation; you will have the confidence to innovate and produce creative design solutions as they develop their own design brief with a client/end user.

Course content

  • Component 1: Principles of Design & Technology 
  • Component 2: Independent Design & Make Project

Throughout the two year course, you will learn to identify, investigate and outline design possibilities to address needs and wants and design and make prototypes that are fit for purpose.

Maths skills are fundamental to design and technology and these are embedded with the course. In addition, science skills, knowledge and understand under pun the theory and practice of design and technology.

Students will also learn technical, design and making principles which they will demonstrate and apply their knowledge of through assessments.

Students are required to analyse and evaluate design decisions and outcomes, including for prototypes made by themselves and others and look at wider issues in design and technology.

Grade C GCSE Design & Technology

Assessment

  • Component 1: External written examination, 2hr30, 50%
  • Component 2: Practical portfolio work, 50%

    • Our transport provision is shared with HSLC’s home-school transport. The routes shown here arrive at Sixth Form for 8.30am and depart at 3.10pm. Bus passes can be purchased for Sixth Form students from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website.

      Free twilight buses also run on these routes three days per week at 5.00pm. These give students the opportunity to take part in clubs, societies, catch-up sessions or to use the Sixth Form study facilities.
