SUMMARY OF UNITS:
Year 1 (AS)
Unit 1 Understanding Communication & Culture
The study of: media texts, intra-personal and interpersonal communication, mainstream culture
and sub-cultures. Examination (1 hour 45 minutes) taken in June.
Unit 2 The Individual & Contemporary Culture
Coursework (topics set by AQA*)
a. An investigation into how we develop and communicate our image of ourselves and our values (500 words) 2009 topics: Individual Language Use, Individual Taste, Body Image and Self-esteem.
b. An Investigation into how we are given, and how we interpret, the messages from our environment and Society (1000 words) 2009 topics: Popular Music, Shopping, Signage and Graffiti.
c. An oral presentation (with visual aids, video, sound recording, website, etc) on 'My Culture'.
Year 2 (A2)
Unit 3 Communicating Culture
How different social and political theories might be used to explain and analyse:
a. Spaces and Places - what the constructed environment communicates to us;
b. Fictions - film, TV, books, video games, etc;
c. Objects of Desire - 'must have' consumer items, etc.
Examination (2 hours) taken in June
Unit 4 Communication & Culture in Practice Coursework
a. Investigations into topics set by AQA*(2000 words)* 2009 topics: Body Modification
b. A web-based presentation of your theory, research and conclusions, i.e. website,
multimedia, podcasts, short DVD. * 2009 topic: Cinema-going.
In careers as diverse as Retailing, the Law, and even the Armed Services, your expanding communication and presentation skills will be valued. It is a useful basis for a wide range of Higher Education courses, but especially benefits Fine Arts and Business Studies, Marketing & Publicity, Politics, Sociology, Psychology and Communications.
