Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism is a full time work related course that lasts for two years. It has been developed to meet the employment needs and opportunities within the Travel and Tourism Industry. This course has excellent links with employers and a strong record of progression opportunities. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A level qualifications after two years.

Course content

Over the two years you will study 4 core units and 15 specialist units. Titles of these include the travel and tourism industry, the business of travel and tourism, customer service, working in the industry, UK as a destination, retail travel operations, entertaining holidaymakers, events and conferences, visitor attractions, marketing, European destinations, world wide destinations, specialist tourism, the cruise industry, tour operations, airline fares and ticketing, business travel operations and rural tourism.

Entry requirements

• 5 GCSEs at A*- C

• An interest in the travel and tourism industry

• Motivation and commitment to the subject

• The ability to meet deadlines

• Good communication and ICT skills would be an advantage


The units you study over the 2 years are entirely coursework based and you will be assessed in a variety of ways. This assessment will include written work in the form of reports, posters or leaflets and some practical assessments achieved through role plays or work based learning and investigations. The evidence for this will be from observation feedback or witness statements. The overall grade for the qualification is awarded to learners who successfully complete all units. The course is practical wherever possible. Customer service, holiday entertainment, event planning, visitor attraction and holiday reps are the main practical units. Other units will focus upon the theory of development, legislation, current trends and consumer demand. So a good knowledge of what is happening in the world today is important.

Future opportunities

Successful students may progress to higher levels of study in Travel and Tourism, Marketing and International Travel as well as Management and HR. Past students working towards degrees have gone to Sheffield Hallam, Leeds Met, MMU and Chester. You can also gain employment within the industry; past students are currently working for all the following companies: British Airways, Thomson Airways, BMI, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomas Cook, Jet2, First Choice, Swissport, NIS Business Travel and Co-op Travel and Key Holidays International.

Further information

As part of the course you will have the opportunity to take part in day trips, team building activities, work placement opportunities and overseas study visits to Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Sicily, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Benidorm and New York.
