Biology A Level at North Bromsgrove High School

Course description

Biology is a fascinating and popular choice of subject. Teaching is based around practical and tutorial sessions. Problem solving and communication skills are developed through class and independent study. Students are expected to analyse factual information and communicate their ideas in writing.

Course content

Module 1- Development of practical skills in biology
Module 2- Foundations in biology
Module 3- Exchange and transport
Module 4- Biodiversity, evolution and disease
Module 5 - Communication, homeostasis and energy
Module 6- Genetics, evolution and ecosystems

Practical and mathematical skills

Practical skills are assessed in all the written examinations. 15% of the total A level marks will be for practical knowledge and understanding.

Students complete a minimum of 12 practical activities to demonstrate practical competence.

A separate endorsement of practical work will be assessed by teachers. This will not be graded. If students pass, it will be reported on their certificate.

Entry requirements

- Standard entry requirements.
- Grade B or above in GCSE biology module
- Grade 6 or above in GCSE maths
- Students must have good written communication skills.
