Chemistry IB at Bridgwater College

Course description

Chemistry is available at Higher level or Standard level. It is designed as a challenging and exciting course that allows successful students to fulfill the requirements of universities both here and internationally. It is a logical science much valued by professions outside science such as Law and Psychology. In order to progress to Medicine you need to study Chemistry IB at Higher Level.

Course content

The core subject include:

  • Stoichiometry
  • Atomic theory
  • Periodicity
  • Bonding
  • States of matter
  • Energetics
  • Kinetics
  • Equilibrium Acids and bases
  • Oxidation and reduction
  • Organic chemistry
Plus two optional units taken from:
  • Modern analytical Chemistry
  • Human Biochemistry
  • Chemistry in Industry and Technology
  • Further Organic Chemistry

Entry requirements

In addition to the general requirement for the IB course, to study Chemistry at Higher Level you will need a BB or higher in Double Science or a B or above in Chemistry at GCSE.


An exciting mix of internal and external assessment. The internal assessment contributes 24% of the final mark.

Future opportunities

At higher level, this course serves as an ideal preparation for university study in Chemistry, Biochemistry, the sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Chemical Engineering. The study of Chemistry at either level provides skills that are relevant to most careers.
