Design and Technology A2 (OCR) Product Design at Ryburn Valley High School

Course description

The course spans two years giving students an insight into researching designing,manufacturing and evaluating products that they have made. Students are taught by a small team of experienced staff and have on offer state of the art computer aided design software combined with computer aided manufacture. Students are encouraged to develop workshop skills including welding, brazing, soldering, tubular bending, latheworking, dip coating, vacuum forming, and dome blowing to develop project work. There is a product study to conduct at A2 level. Students can choose any product to analyse from a domestic plug to a PSP game console to a canoe….AS Level (2 exams) Students are asked about materials, components and design and market influences.A2 Level (1 exam)Students are asked various questions on the whole course.Students get to apply the knowledge learnt from workshop experience, industrial visits, design manufacturing process’s and material theory lessons in 3 exams.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Art and Design or Computing to prepare for higher education in areas of and design, technology, architecture or more general higher education courses.With further training, you could go into a job related to design and technology such as an Architect, Carpenter or Computer Technician.The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
