English Language A Level at The Whitehaven Academy

Course description

English is at the heart of all communication and therefore the skills gained from studying English Language are valuable for any number of careers involving spoken or written English, not simply those that are directly linked to the study of language.

You will study the Textual Variations and Representations, Language Diversity, Writing Skills, Children’s Language Development, Language Discourses, Language Investigation and Original Writing.

Entry requirements

A grade C in GCSE English Language (a grade C in Language will be considered on an individual basis)


AS – 2 written examination papers

A2 – 2 written examination papers and one coursework unit, which comprises two pieces of work

Future opportunities

English Language is a universally recognised qualification for entry into college/university courses, particularly for those in arts and humanities. Possible career options for students of English Language include: journalist, publishing, editor, copywriter, writer, primary school teacher, secondary school teacher, public relations officer, lexicographer, academic librarian, arts administrator and jobs related to marketing, advertising and law, amongst many others.
