Further Mathematics (AS Level) at Morecambe Community High School

Course description

The structure of the course is very similar to the normal A-Level.

In year 12 for AS Further Maths you will study 3 units,

Course content

Further Pure Mathematics 1


Series; complex numbers; numerical solution of equations; coordinate

systems, matrix algebra, proof.

 Decision Maths 1 (D1) Develop skills in mathematical modelling and the use of algorithms in a variety of situations.  A lot of highly paid jobs use the ideas of Decision Maths.

Numerical Methods â€“Using numerical methods to solve equations that cannot be solved by usual methods.  Numerical differentiation and integration.

And in Year 13,


In year 13 for A-Level Further Maths you will study 3 further units.  Students must complete Further Pure Mathematics 2 (described below), but there is a greater degree of flexibility for the other two courses.  This is usually decided as a group, and is subject to availability. 

 Further Pure Mathematics 2

 Inequalities; series, first order differential equations; second order differentialequations; further complex numbers, Maclaurin and Taylor series.



Each unit is assessed by written paper that is 90 minutes in length, and there is a coursework element for Numerical Methods.
