Applied Science BTEC Certificate at Highfields School

Course description

Science is a course that prepares students for working in industry. You will have the opportunity to study the art of being a scientist in a covational context and be given the skills to work in a science laboratory.

Highfields School has been delivering BTEC Science for several years. We have a team of very experienced teachers with a wide variety of experience working in the science industry.

Course content

The course is broken up into 6 units of study, each with a different focus. You will look at the Fundamentals of Science. How to Design a Laborartory and How to Communicate Your Ideas, before specialising into new units in Year 13 giving you the focus to follow a particular path.

You will have opportunities to have visiting speakers and go on external visits to industry to develop your understanding of the course better and experience it in a real life context. 

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of grade C in Mathematics and English and at least a grade C in two Science subjects or a merit in Level 2 BTEC Science.

Assessment

The course involves being taught a short series of lessons before being set an assignment that will assess your understanding of the topic given. There is no external examination of this subject and all work is teacher assessed.

Future opportunities

As BTEC Level 3 counts towards UCAS points, there are a lot of opportunities for further study at UNiversity. A list of Universities that consider the BTEC Science qualification can be found on the Edexcel website.
