Art and Design - AS & A2 at The Crest Academies

Course description

The aim of the course is to encourage the creative development of work through investigating and making; and knowledge and understanding in Art and Design. It is a practical course that develops skills to express ideas and use visual language. During the A’ Level course a wide range of media, techniques and processes are explored. The emphasis is learning by doing.

Entry requirements

Minimun of 5 Grade A*-C in GCSE including Maths & English.

A grade C or above in GCSE Art and Design. Good EnglishLanguage skills as written work is an assessment criteria.


AS is a one year course that leads onto A2. AS consists of 1 unit of portfolio work and 1 external assignment, set by the examination board. A2 builds on from AS and also has 1 unit of work- the personal assignment. This unit has a written component; candidates have to write a 2000 word essay in support of their ideas. This is then followed by the final external assignment.

Each unit of work is equally weighted at 25%.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to higher education in Art and Design, aiming to join the world of advertising, graphics, illustration, textile designers, fashion designers, architects, interior designers, photographers, to name just a few.
