Course description

Media Studies is the study of advertising, film, television, news, radios and the ever growing platform of social media and its role in daily life. You will develop your critical understanding of the media and how it communicates messages across a range of platforms whilst developing your creative and practical skills.You will study:1) Investigating mediaTexts, concepts and contextsMedia platforms - broadcasting, e-media and printCross media study – broadcast, documentary, lifestyle, music, news or sport.2) Critical PerspectivesRepresentationNew/Digital MediaIssues and production3) Creating Media4) Media research and production This course is approximately 50% exam and 50% coursework.

Course content

You will utlise your creativity through practical work which will include the use of specialist software to prepare newspaper and magazine layouts as well as the preparation of film pieces. You will also take part in group work, investigations of contemporary case studies, presentations and research projects including an end of year critical investigation on a topic of your choice.

Entry requirements

APS 40 and 5 GCSEs at grades C or above, including English and maths at grades C/5 or above.
