English Language A AS Level (AQA) at Ryburn Valley High School

Course description

After one year, AS English Language students sit three papers: Discovering Language, Using Language and Interacting through Language. They study topics, such as, how we learn to speak, how language represents groups in society, and how speech differs from writing, as well as learning how to analyse texts and how to write in different forms.This course is for any student wishing to pursue a wide variety of careers, for example, media, advertising, journalism, teaching, or local government. It will also provide a solid grounding in using language effectively, for instance, in producing essays, reports, speeches, further studies, and communicating in everyday life. A minimum grade B in English Language is needed at GCSE.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in English Language, which could lead onto higher education in English Language or more general higher education courses.With further training, you could go into a job related to English Language such as a Teacher, Journalist, or Editor.You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking.
