Fine Art A level at Langley Park School for Girls

Course description

We offer a Fine Art A Level, 2 Year course which includes 2D and 3D work in painting, drawing, mixed media and print making and leads to the full A Level qualification.

Course content

You undertake an in depth study of: painting, drawing, print making, mixed media and sculpture. You are encouraged to analyse made and natural forms and structures in order to develop use of visual imagery and powers of personal expression. Development of critical facilities is central to the course, and visits are made to galleries and exhibitions to broaden your knowledge of contemporary Art, Craft and Design as well as that from the past and from other cultures. You keep a sketch book/journal throughout the course.

Year 12: 2 units of coursework set internally

Year 13: continue second unit of coursework and make a written contextual study and finally 1 externally set assignment.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE Art and Design. We have found that students who do not have GCSE Art and Design have been at a disadvantage.

Skills required:

A strong interest in the visual world, in drawing, painting, sculpture and in using clay. Willingness to research and develop ideas through observational drawing. The ability to work to deadlines and a high level of motivation. You will also be required to produce in depth written analysis and research into the work of artists and designers.

Unit 1: Coursework, Practical Work, Weighting:60%, Internally set, Internally marked, Externally moderated

Unit 2: Coursework, Weighting: 60%, Internally set, Internally marked, Externally moderated

Year 13: 

Unit 2 continued: Coursework, Practical Work, Personal Study, Weighting 60%, Internally set, Internally marked, Externally moderated

Unit 3: Externally set assignment, Weighting:40%, Externally set, Internally marked, Externally moderated

All work is assessed internally and externally moderated by the examination board.
