Course content

Media Studies are designed to encourage students to:enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily livesdevelop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of production skillsexplore production processes, technologies and other relevant contextsbecome independent in research skills and their application in their production work and in developing their own views and interpretations.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in GCSE English Language is required as the course requires extensive writing and is assessed partly on ‘the quality of written communication’.


Year Two – A2Unit 3MS Media InvestigationAgain this unit involves the students creating their own media production.  Assessment could be an edited blog or Power Point presentation.50%Unit 4MS4 Media – Text, Industry and AudienceStudents study the relationship between text, audience and industry and the debates surrounding them.  The final examination is a written 2½ hour paper with three questions.50%

Future opportunities

Success on this course provides a valuable qualification for progression to Higher Education or to the world of work.  It is particularly useful if you wish to work as a writer, market researcher, general researcher, media consultant, advertising executive, public relations officer, website manager, press officer or journalist.
