English Literature AS & A Level at Churchill Community College

Course description

The study of English Literature is an enriching and inspirational experience which unlocks a wide range of thoughts and ideas and developsstudents’ understanding of how our literary heritage reflects our culture. Literary analysis also sharpensstudents’ critical awareness of how meanings are produced – a skill which is applicable in a wide range of contexts, including Higher Education and various career paths.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5A*-C at GCSE including at least a Grade C in GCSE English Literature or GCSE English Language.

Assessment

Year 12:  

  • On the subject of War: two short coursework assignments.
  • One summer examination, responding to two questions: one comparing poemsfrom an Anthology and one response to an unseen non-fiction extract, drawing on wider reading.

Year 13:

  • One coursework assignment, comparing a Shakespeare play with two other texts.
  • One summer examination: two questions, responding to unseen texts on the theme of love through the ages.
