Archaeology AS level at Ormiston Sudbury Academy

Course description

This two year course comprises of four modules; Ritual and Religion in Prehistoric Britain, Techniques of Archaeological Investigation, World Archaeology and finally a self-directed Archaeological investigation. This course will feature numerous trips to sites of special interest around the country and to the area around Sudbury.

Course content

  • Ritual and religion in prehistoric Europe: You will study a series of ritual sites from across European Prehistory using the archaeological remains to better understand the beliefs of ancient cultures.
  • Techniques of Archaeological Investigation: You will look at how archaeologists work in the field and how the laboratory plays an increasingly important role.
  • World Archaeology: In this unit you will look at ancient civilisations from around the world and draw parallels with ancient cultures closer to home.
  • Archaeological Investigation: This extended project invites you to create your own Archaeological investigation and to see it through from plan to field work to write-up.

Archaeology is the original, all-round subject incorporating elements of science, history, philosophy and sociology. It is one of the most respected academic qualifications available and can lead to further study or almost any discipline you care to mention.
