Physical Education A Level at St Michael's Church of England High School

Course description

A-level PE at SSC allows you to develop an understanding of how different factors link together to benefit sporting performance. Physiological, sociological and psychological aspects make this a dynamic course that has many dimensions. Understanding these factors and applying them to practical situations will refine your own sporting performance in your chosen area of specialism.

Course content

In the first year, you will have the opportunity to investigate the impact of lifestyle choices upon health and fitness, research the impact of psychological development on performance and analyse all aspects of technical development. In the second year, you will investigate all aspects of physical and psychological development of sportspeople, investigating nutrition for health and performance and contemporary influences affecting provision, choice, participation and performance in physical activity.


Examination – Unit 1 AS (50%) 1.75 hours
Practical – Unit 2 (Continuous assessment in your practical activity) AS (35%)
Practical – (Coaching or Officiating your chosen activity) AS (15%)

Examination – Unit 3 A2 (50%) 2 hours
Practical – Unit 4 (Continuous assessment in your practical activity) A2 (35%)
Coursework – (Investigative research project) A2 (15%)

Assessment is via externally moderated coursework, practical assessment and examination following the WJEC specification.

Future opportunities

You can progress to higher education to study degree courses, including Sports and Exercise Science, Sports Studies and Sports Development, or opt for more vocational courses. PE is an excellent foundation for any degree course or employment requiring team work, communication and problem solving skills and can lead to careers in teaching and the fitness and leisure industry.
