Production Arts (Make-up) BTEC Level 3 Diploma at South Downs College
This is a two year full time course designed for 16-19 year olds, who are interested in a make-up career within the Theatre, Film or TV industry.
This course covers a wide range of make-up skills from basic stage, through to period make-up and special effects. You will also learn wig-making techniques and how to style and dress hair.
The minimum entry requirement for this course is four GCSEs at grades A*-C. This MUST include English Language, Maths and Art.
An Art related subject e.g. Photography, Graphics or Textiles may be considered if Art has not been taken as an option, but would have to be of a B profile and be supported by a portfolio of facial and figure drawings.
In all cases a portfolio of art work will need to be shown at interview. GCSE History would be preferable but is not compulsory.
The course is unit based and the units and written assignments are assessed through a grade related criteria. The grades that are awarded are Refer, Pass, Merit or Distinction. There will be an overall grade awarded for the qualification.
Primarily this course gives you the opportunity to progress to higher education studying subjects such as Fashion Styling, Make-up Design, Prosthetics and Model-Making.
Employment Avenues: Make-up Assistant (TV & Film), Hairdressing, Wig Making and Maintenance, Wigs Assistant in Theatrical Productions.
Details of the uniform and kit will be given at both interview & induction. Students will be expected to work outside of normal College hours. Students on this course should allow at least 10 hours of further study per week.
During each academic year students will be expected to participate in a minimum of three external theatre productions. These will necessitate working on Saturday and Sunday and in the evening during the performance run. This is a compulsory part of the course and dates will be given well in advance to ensure there are no problems and that students can ensure they are available for these activities.
Facial piercings, false nails and nail enamel are not acceptable in any practical class and must be removed prior to entry of the session.
