Craft Masonry Level 2 Diploma at Truro and Penwith College

Course description

This qualification has been designed around the needs of Bricklaying and Craft Masonry employers within the construction industry and provides a mix of both practical and theory-based teaching and learning in a realistic workshop and classroom environment.

During the course you will develop and practice the skills required for employment and career progression as a Craft Mason at intermediate level through the study of units such as: principles of building construction information and communication, interpreting working drawings to set out masonry structures, build solid and cavity walls to form craft masonry structures, internal and external finishes for craft masonry structures and install pitched roofing systems for small scale building projects.

On this full time 1 year full time programme of study you will learn the  processes associated with the role of the craft mason including granite and stonework, brick and block laying, plastering, rendering and roofing, amongst other tasks. You will also learn to use the hand tools, power tools and other equipment associated with the trade to enable you to fulfil the role of a Craft Mason.

Truro and Penwith College have extremely realistic simulated work environments where you will learn and develop your practical skills as well as the most up to date professional tools and equipment to make your studies here as close to a real working environment as possible.

During the course you will further develop skills learnt at level 1 Bricklaying and develop as a Craft Mason at level 2. Passing this course could also enable progression to advanced studies at level 3. If you are not exempt, there is a requirement to complete Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications alongside mainstream studies

Entry requirements

There is a requirement for students to complete Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying before progressing to this course. A successful interview with a course coordinator and a keen interest int he subject are also required.

Assessment

Craft masonry practical coursework will be assessed through set practical tasks in a well-equipped workshop; after each taught unit, underpinning knowledge is assessed via internally-set test papers and online exams.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying which requires one further year of study or you could progress directly into employment via an Apprenticeship or as a semi-skilled craftsman.
