History AQA AS Level (Linear) at Poynton High School

Course description

The course aims to give students a chance to explore key areas of British and European History that are both significant and interesting and gain a deep understanding of historical developments.
At AS level there are two examined components. The first is a breadth study looking at The Tudors from 1485-1547. The second component is a depth study on a key period of European history; students can choose to do either:
  • Germany from 1918-1933 looking at democracy in Germany after WW1 and the rise of the Nazis, or
  • Russia from 1917-1929 which will look at the fall of the Tsars and the creation of Communism under Lenin.

Course content

Learning Method:
Students will be taught by two members of staff, each specialising in British or European History. A range of techniques are used and students will experience a variety of learning styles from note-taking and class discussion to group work and individual research.
Students may get the opportunity to go on a trip to London to enhance their understanding of the Tudors by visiting such sites at Westminster Abbey and Hampton Court Palace.

Entry requirements

  • 5 Grade Cs or above at GCSE, including a B or above in History if taken at GCSE and a grade B in English Language or Literature if not previously studied.


Component 1: British study 50% of AS
Component 2: European study 50% of AS
