Allied Health Professionals and Sports Science apt awards Access to HE Diploma Level 3 at Cornwall College

Course description

Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education. This is ideal for those who want to re-train or re-direct their lives into Health professions such as: Chiropodists/podiatrists,;Dietitians; Occupational therapists;
orthoptists; orthotists; Paramedics; Physiotherapists; Prosthetists; Radiographers; Speech and language therapists; as well as Sports Science professions and many other science related careers. There is a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part-time employment and family commitments.

Course content

Attendance at the College is required three days per week for one year. You will study a range of units at level 3 (equivalent to A level). Each unit is worth 3 credits. For successful completion of the access course you will need 60 credits overall. The 60 credits are made up of 45 credits from academic subject subject areas and 15 credits from academic preparation units, which are designed to prepare you for academic study at university level.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to attend a workshop where you will find out about how Access to HE courses are structured at Saltash and during which you will you will undertake the College initial assessment to assess your suitablility to study at this level. This will be followed by an  interview where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete an Initial Assessment

Applicants who do not hold a GCSE in mathematics or English at grade C or above will be expected to gain these qualifications before or alongside their Access studies. The opportunity to achieve these qualifications will be provided.


Assessment will take the form of coursework, presentations or in class assessments depending on the unit you are studying.

Future opportunities

An Allied Health Professions Access to HE Diploma course is a suitable entrance qualification for the many health science based degrees in Plymouth, Cornwall and throughout the country. It is also a recognised qualification that can help you gain entry into the workplace.

Several of our students progress to Plymouth University, other Universitties across the country or have continued their studies at Cornwall College, selecting courses from within with our range of foundation degrees.
