Interactive Media & Software (Inc. Networking & Security) Level 3 Diploma at Blackburn College

Course description

This course is designed for those who want to contentrate their learning in the area of IT, specialing in software design, web design and programming.  Alongside academic studies, learners have the opportunity to take part in World Skills competitions and go on trips in the UK and abroad. 

Course content

Learners will study 12 units over 2 years.  In the first year learners will study general units to give a broader understanding of the IT sector, such as:

  • Computer Systems
  • Business Information Systems
  • Computer Networks
  • Website Production and Management
  • Web Animation for Interactive Media
  • Database Design

In the second year learners have the opportunity to chose their preferred pathway eg Media and Software, Programming or Networking and Security.  Units can include Project Management, Systems Analysis and Design, Computer Games Platforms and Technologies, Digital Graphics for Interactive Media, 2D Animation Production and Web Server Scripting. 

Learners will also study GCSE to resit their grade D in Maths and/or English.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grades A*-C including English Language and Mathematics at a minimum of D grade. Equivalent qualifications will be considered.  Applicants over 21 are welcome and may not need the above qualifications. 


100% coursework assessment.  During the course learners are set assignments that will be graded and an overall grade for the qualification awarded.  Learners are encouraged to use e-learning to support and extend their learning in their private study time. 

Future opportunities

Successful learners will be awarded the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT from Edexcel which is equivalent to 2 A-Levels.   This qualification is mapped to the Degree in Business Information Systems at the University Centre at Blackburn College which is certified by Lancaster University, providing an easy progression route for the subjects chosen and gives a strong foundation for degree level study.
