Construction BTEC Diploma at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

Successful completion will enable progression onto BTEC National Extended Diploma or Diploma in Construction at Level 3 or the Craft Certificate Level 2 in a specific construction trade.

The course will give you construction career awareness which may lead to jobs such as:-

- Assistant Site Foreman
- Trainee Surveyor
- Trainee Engineer

As well as these, you will gain the potential to enter Apprenticeships in trade areas such as Bricklaying, Carpentery and Joinery and Painting and Decorating

Course content

The course has 3 mandatory units:-

- Structure of the Construction Industry
- Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
- Sustainability in the Construction Industry

You will also study a further 9 units covering construction trades from the following areas :-

- Brickwork
- Carpentry and Joinery
- Painting and Decorating
- Plastering
- Plumbing

Entry requirements

Two GCSEs at grade D/3, including Maths, or Level 1 Vocational Qualification
and suitable references and Interview


To pass this course you will have to successfully complete all practical and theory assignments and practical.

Future opportunities

At the end of this course you will have a better understanding of the construction industry and which career path is most suited for your needs. You may wish to take a trade route from one of the areas you have studied.

Depending on your skills you may be able to go directly onto Level 2 in your chosen trade area.

You could also take the professional route and study BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma at Level 3.

Further information

You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothes to wear in the workshop.

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.
