This course offers an exciting approach to Art History that develops learning skills in the understanding and analysis of the visual language of an extensive range of works of art, architecture, artefacts and craft across a wide range of historical periods and cultural sources.

This is an investigative approach to art history, with the emphasis on academic study together with practical personal investigation. Through classroom activities, research topics, essay writing, critical debate and analysis you will study a wide range of visual elements from the Renaissance to 20th and21st Century Art and Design, history and culture. Through these projects you will learn how to place art within a historical, political and social context and establish links and connections betweendifferent times, ideas, artists and events. The course programme requires regular Gallery and Museum visits both locally and nationally to view works first hand and these visits form a core part of the course. Many of the visits will take place in school time but students are also expected to visit Galleries independently to pursue personal areas of interest. Students progressing to University will benefit from the development of their critical, analytical and contextual skills, which can be appliedacross a wide range of subjects. Life drawing classes are offered to all students on this course.

Entry requirements

If you achieve at least 5 C grades or above or the equivalent youcould consider Advanced Level courses.However, for the majority of Level 3 subjects B grades at GCSEare required. Specific grade requrements for subjects are available from staff and will be discussed at interview .
