Course description

Health and Social Care The course provides a wide education that will provide the student with a background to the Health and Social Care industry. This will allow the student to seek employment or progress to college or University. The AVCE Health and Social Care Double Award comprises of: Compulsory Units Equal opportunities and clients rights Communicating in Health and Social care Physical aspects of health Factors affecting human growth and development Health and Social Care and early years service Research perspectives in health and social care. Optional Units These will be selected by the tutors and could include: Child development, Social Policy, Sociological aspects of health and illness, cell structure, genetics and reproduction for health care, child care practice and influences on health and disease. Assessment Format The award will be assessed by a mixture of coursework type units of work and tests set by the examining body. These tests can be taken more than once. Work experience will be a very important part of the course and it will be arranged in a block or blocks within the course.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (preferably in a relevant Humanities / Sience subject) at Grade C or GNVQ Intermediate

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Health and Social Care, which could lead onto higher education, BTEC Higher Nationals or NVQ Levels 3 and 4 in areas of childcare, healthcare, Nutrition, or more general courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Health and Social Care such as a Nurse, Midwife, Dietician, Teacher or areas of Social Work. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the social sectors.
