Automotive Engineering IMI Intermediate Diploma Level 2 at Fareham College

Course description

This course prepared you for a career in the motor vehicle industry.

If you’re a practical, hands-on sort of person who enjoys getting stuck in, a Motor Vehicle course could be just what you’re looking for.

Getting skilled in this field will give you the start you need in a trade that is always in high demand.

Our teachers are vocational experts and use their skills and experience very effectively to motivate and support students to achieve.


Course content

  • Maintaining positive working relationships

  • Routine vehicle maintenance

  • Removing and replacing the following: Engine units and components, Auxiliary electrical units and components, Chassis units and components

  • Pre and post-work vehicle inspections

  • Support in finding a work placement to gain garage experience one day a week


Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade D or above. Level 1 Motor Vehicle qualification or equivalent experience and knowledge.

Financial information

Students will be required to purchase and wear overalls, steel toe cap safety shoes and safety glasses. A list of professional clothing will be supplied at your application interview.

Future opportunities

You can progress on to a Level 3 course, or continue studying on an Apprenticeship scheme.

Jobs could include: mechanic in a garage or auto repair workshop, agricultural machinery repair/maintenance, Armed Forces (transport) or roadside recovery officer.

Further information

The qualification awarded will be the IMI Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles.

    • All Automotive, Engineering and Manufacturing courses run by Fareham College are conducted at our Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training, or CEMAST, campus on the Daedalus airfield in Lee-on-the-Solent.

      The site is the central training facility for over 900 Full Time and Part Time Students, and acts as the main learning centre for students in apprenticeship programmes with our partner companies – BAE Systems, GE Aviation, Virgin Atlantic, Coopervision, Burgess Marine, Jensen Motorsport to mention but a few.
