Chemistry A2 level at The Bushey Academy

Course description

This course enables students to:

  • develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for chemistry, including developing an interest in further study and careers in chemistry;
  • appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society;
  • develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of How Science Works;
  • develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they relate to each other.

Course content

Content is split into six teaching modules:

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in chemistry
  • Module 2 – Foundations in chemistry
  • Module 3 – Periodic table and energy
  • Module 4 – Core organic chemistry
  • Module 5 – Physical chemistry and transition elements
  • Module 6 – Organic chemistry and analysis

Periodic Table, elements and physical chemistry (100 marks) 2hrs 15mins written paper
37% of total A level

Synthesis and analytical techniques (100 marks) 2hrs 15mins written paper
37% of total A level

Unified Chemistry (70 marks) 1hr 30mins written paper
26% of total A level

Future opportunities

Choosing Chemistry at GCE will provide you with plenty of opportunities for further progression. At AS/A Level, in colleges and universities, Chemistry is a very relevant subject.

Combining Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics provides a sound basis for technically based degrees such as Engineering.
