Engineering Level 2 Diploma at Southport College

Course description

This is a full time practical and theory based course aimed at giving the students a good understanding of general engineering principles as it covers all areas of engineering; Machining, Fabrication & Welding and Electrical Installation. It is the first step towards an Engineering Apprenticeship or other related courses such as the Extended Diploma in Engineering or Electrical Installation.

Course content

Students will study a range of units including:

• Working Safely in Engineering 
• Using and Communicating Technical Information
• Principles of manufacturing and engineering technology
• Machining using Lathes
• Wiring and testing electrical circuits 
• Sheet metal fabrication and Welding

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade D or Level 1 Diploma in related subject. Satisfactory reference and interview.


On line and written exams along with assignments and Portfolio evidence.

Financial information

You must provide your own overalls and steel toe capped boots, a scientific calculator, pens, pencils and notebook etc. The cost of any trips throughout the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course you may progress on to the Extended Diploma in Engineering Level 3, an Engineering Apprenticeship or other related courses such as Electrical Installation Level 3.
